High pT Probes of Dense Matter Created in Heavy Ion Collisions at RHIC
نویسنده
چکیده
An overview of recent high-pT hadron and photon measurements at RHIC is presented with a focus on the evolution of hadron/photon production from intermediate pT (. 5 GeV/c) to high pT (> 10 GeV/c). Addressed topics include single high-pT hadron production, azimuthal anisotropy of π production, di-jet modification at intermediate pT and inclusive photon-hadron correlations. The understanding of these results in the context of different energy loss models is also discussed.

High-pT Particle Production in PHENIX
It has been established that "hard probes", observables involving high-momentum transfer, provide useful tools for studying the hot, dense medium created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. The nuclear modification factor, azimuthal correlations, direct photon production, as well as the dependence of the nuclear modificaton factor on centrality and angle with respect to the reaction plane ar...
متن کاملSystematic Study of High-pT Direct Photon Production with the PHENIX Experiment at RHIC
When studying the initial state and evolution of the matter created in relativistic heavy ion collisions, high-pT direct photons are a powerful probe. They are created in initial hard processes and in parton fragmentation, and possibly in interactions of partons with the hot and dense medium. We present systematic measurements of high-pT direct photon production in √ sNN = 200 GeV p+p and Au+Au...

A major goal of measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is to quantify the properties of the QCD matter created in heavy-ion collisions at high energy [1]. Unlike quarks and gluons, the photon does not fragment into hadrons and can be directly observed as a final state particle. Due to their direct access to the underlying physics scale and their negligible coupling to the me...
متن کاملThe Fluid Nature of Quark-Gluon Plasma
Collisions of heavy nuclei at very high energies offer the exciting possibility of experimentally exploring the phase transformation from hadronic to partonic degrees of freedom which is predicted to occur at several times normal nuclear density and/or for temperatures in excess of ∼ 170 MeV. Such a state, often referred to as a quark-gluon plasma, is thought to have been the dominant form of m...

This is a review of the physics prospects for relativistic heavy ion collisions in the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The motivation for the study of superdense matter created in relativistic heavy ion collision is the prospect of observing a novel state of strongly interacting matter, the quark-gluon plasma. Experiments at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Col...
